NEW** Writing Assignment #3
  • You are going to write about a favourite place using the 5 senses. As you describe the place, I want to you to use words that create visuals, sounds, tastes, and a sense of touch. The idea here is to write to create an atmosphere or feeling.

  • You may need to build a fictional story around this place or simply begin describing it. In this assignment students are to focus on the elements of setting ( time, place, description)  using the senses and the concept of show not tell.  (10)
Example:
from "The Old House at Home" (1940)
by Joseph Mitchell (1908-1996)
McSorley's bar is short, accommodating approximately ten elbows, and is shored up with iron pipes. It is to the right as you enter. To the left is a row of armchairs with their stiff backs against the wainscoting. The chairs are rickety; when a fat man is sitting in one, it squeaks like new shoes every time he takes a breath. The customers believe in sitting down; if there are vacant chairs, no one ever stands at the bar. Down the middle of the room is a row of battered tables. Their tops are always sticky with spilled ale. In the centre of the room stands the belly stove, which has an isinglass door and is exactly like the stoves in Elevated stations.

New Assignments

Photo Assignment #3 Fall shots:(5 shots)  Using all of the elements of composition ( focal point, rule of thirds, leading lines, angles etc.) you are to take 5 shots that are distinctly FALL.  Try taking a trip to the pumpkin patch, a stroll in the woods, fall leaves, rain boots and puddles, fall vegetables...you get the idea. Do not forget about what you have learned so far about composition. The photos can include people or objects or scenery...but try to mix it up a little. ( Marks 10)

Photo Assignment#4 Spot colour: Again using all of the elements of composition...you should intentionally go out to shoot spot colour photos ( meaning try to focus on something that has a nice colour) You will be turning your photo black and white and then highlighting  a spot of colour using Pic Monkey. We went over this in class. In Pic Monkey you should choose the magic want tool and go down to black and white, choose your brush hardness etc and begin to spot colour. ( 5 shots, 10 marks)
