Welcome to Photo/Writing 9 2022

Overview Photo/Writing 9:

In this class you will learn much about how to see the world from a different perspective, how to use the digital SLR cameras, upload and organize photos and how to edit in Photoshop. This class will allow a fair bit of freedom, but with this freedom comes responsibility. Along with Photography you will be learning how to improve your creative writing skills by way of various exercises and assignments.

( Class Guidelines: to be discussed)

We need good photography for the yearbook. Students are encouraged to use their phones for taking photos as much as possible. School cameras will be available for student use in class and may be able to be signed out to take home with teacher permission. Techniques on how to use your phones/digital slr cameras will be taught in class. Students should carry their phone charge cords with them for uploading photos.

Requirements for success in this course:

  • a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and push beyond the level you are at
  • your own cell phone and charger cables
  • using class time effectively and a respect the freedom you have in this class
  • realizing the benefits of  taking photos outside of class occasionally
  • be a good model for your peer/help out others when you can
  • Keeping up with writing assignments and getting your work peer, parent or teacher edited
  • : ALL COMPUTER KEYBOARDS AND MICE ARE TO BE WIPED AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS
  • TRY TO REMAIN DISTANCED APART FROM OTHERS WHEN PHOTOGRAPHING
  • SHOOT OUTSIDE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

Core Competencies

  • Critical and Creative thinking
  • Self and Social Responsibility
  • Visual and written communication skills

Assessment:

Students are at the beginning stages of learning a skill so taking lots of photos will be important for skill development. Assignments in Photo will focus on developing an eye for composition and learning how to take photos from different angles. Students will have various assignments focusing on specific skills and will be assess by a portfolio of their work. In writing the same format will be in place. Writing is broken down into understanding character, setting, poetry and creative short assignments. I am a firm believer in process based teaching and assessments for the arts.

Welcome Back: The Week of Tues. April 6-9

Hopefully you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break. We have 3weeks left of school and a fair bit of work still to complete.

SORRY PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATES FOR ASSIGNMENTS:

The following assignments are due no later than FRI. APRIL 23 on Flickr, but I would prefer to have skatepark shots, sky shots and photo poem wrapped up by the end of this week

  • skatepark shots 10 shots = 20 mark
  • sky shots 5 shots = 10 marks
  • writing: photo poem = 10 marks          Please note: I have taken out the thank-you letter assign
  • portraits 10 shots = 20 marks
  • NEW spring shots 5 shots = 10 marks
  • writing: dialogue (16 lines) = 10 marks
  • photoshop headswap = 10 marks
  • Final Slideshow: 30 photos, 10 of which can be from your assignment shots or any good photos you have taken within this year. The other 20 shots are a variety of your choice quality shots.

NEW PHOTO ASSIGNMENT this week SPRING SHOTS: 5 shots = 10 marks. Go outside and look for signs of spring....cherry blossoms, tulips, spring birds, buds on trees, sunshine or pussy willows etc.

SLIDESHOWS WILL BE SHOWN IN CLASS ON Mon Apr. 19 and Tues Apr. 20

Lesson on PhotoStory 3: Unless you have i Movie on your computer, laptop, or phone, or another program you know how to use well, you should be using Photostory 3 program on the school computers to produce your Photo Slideshow.

CHOOSING PHOTOS
  • Choose a variety of different photos including: macros, landscape, pets, portraits, friend shots, your own choice shots, creative shots etc. Basically anything goes, just provide some variety.
  • Choose photos that are of high quality and ones that you think are your best photos.
  • Make sure the photos you choose have been edited, are IN FOCUS, and are well composed.
It really helps if you have all the photos you want to put in your slideshow edited and saved on the computer. MOVING PHOTOS FROM FLICKR TO THE COMPUTER: Go to Flickr, click on your photo, go to the arrow down button, view all sizes and go to the largest size, and then to the top left to download, pick up the photo on your L drive under Downloads and move it to your slideshow folder.

You may want to think about a song that would work well with your photos. It must be in an mp3 format. Your first slide should have your first and last name on it, and should be a photo like a sky shot or a shot that is mostly a background shot.

MOVING PHOTOS INTO PHOTOSTORY
1. You will import your photos into Photostory by opening Photostory and going to Import Photos. Make a point of saving your project every time you go into the program to add photos or edit. Once you save your slideshow, you will find it under My Videos on your L Drive.
2.You will need to go into customize motions to edit the timing and framing of the shots. Each shot should be timed around 3.5-4 seconds in length. Try to keep your start and end positions quite close in size. If it goes from really small to really large, the slideshow will blip the photos or zoom them in and out too fast. You do not want to have your photos scrolling in and out of the frame, the less movement the better.
3. Do not use the music in Photostory (BAD CHOICE) choose from audio files on the m drive or download your own music by going to a You Tube to mp3 downloader.
4. Choose one transition and stick with it, a fade is probably best.
5. Do not use the Photostory Editor and do not over edit your photos.
6. Your working project file is a WP3 file and once you are satisfied with your slideshow you will combine the music and video by clicking next all the way to the end. Your final file name should have your name on it and be a WMV file. lisachasephotostory.wmv You do not need to type in wmv, it will do this automatically when you press next.
7. You will be saving the file to the M drive under your class folder. Make sure your name is on the video file, and it says wmv after your name.

Examples of a few well done portraits.

Colin Kelly Portrait Colin Kelly Portrait2

Jaelyn Fisher Portrait  Sage Cole-Hamilton Portrait

You should be working on the following work this week.

  • Skatepark Shots:10 shots
  • Portraits: 10 shots of 2 different people
  • Skyshots: 5 shots
  • Dialogue: 16 lines: moving plot or developing character:10 marks
  • Headswap: exchanging heads and bodies:10 marks
Please put all work in albums on Flickr. Make sure you have met the criteria and have put your best work in albums. Continue to take photos for your final slideshow.

Final Collection of Best Work: This should include your best photos from the class. 10 of these photos can be from before this class, or old assignment photos from the class, but the other 20 need to be recently taken photos by you. Try to include a variety of different shots. I do not want to see 30 dog shots, or 30 flower shots. Try to include: macros, landscape, portrait, creative shots. Marks : 30

NEW ASSIGNMENT

Photo Poem: Plan to take a photo that has some space around it, (or use one you already have) focus on a subject that you think you can write a short poem on. The poem should be a least 4 lines long. Focus your poem on meaning not rhyme. I really do not like poems that have no meaning and meaningless rhyme. Your poem needs to be about something.

Think about the concept of simplicity with regard to the poem and the photo. Make sure your text is large enough to read. Below are 3 poems I wrote from some of your photos to show you as an example. Thank you to the photographers! Please post in an album on Flickr call it Photo Poem. Before putting your poem onto the photo, have it edited by a parent, teacher or friend for spelling, grammar and meaning.

Wed/Thurs

FYI: Quality is expected when shooting and choosing photos for the final SLIDESHOW. Here is an example of "A" quality work. See LINK: Cheri Garcia Photos

New Assignment: Portraits: You are to take 10 photos of 2 different people. The photos should be taken from different angles and in different locations. You should not be too far away from your model. I do not want every photo to look the same. Please see samples shown on Flickr. This assignment is worth 20 marks and should be put into an album on Flickr.

Working with 2 models of your choice, you should plan to set up a portrait shoot. You will need 5 different shots of each model. Plan to shoot a variety of different shots even on different days, including but not limited to: a couple of head shots, a couple of full body shots, a fewcreative shots using props etc. Study other portrait photographer's work and learn how to effectively pose your model. To get 10 good shots you may need to take 30 or more shots.

Tips:
  • get ideas for your shoot
  • be aware of where the light is ( best times to shoot dawn and dusk: outdoors)
  • choose a good background
  • use a prop ( umbrella, hat, scarf, sport equipment, pumpkin etc)
  • shoot people in their element ( skateboarder with a skateboard at the skatepark)
  • create a rapport with your model and direct the shoot, which means tell the model what you want them to do.
So maybe you can research posing and plan your model and location. If you have done your shoot, you should spend some good quality time editing. If you are doing your portraits at school, find someone to photograph and get busy. There are lots of places to shoot around the school. ( skate park, woods, garage door near the soccer clubhouse, metal storage containers on the soccer fields. )

Friday Mar.5

After Mr Reilly gives the lesson, please work on any incomplete assignments before moving on to new assignments. All of the old assignments including macros and bucket list are due March 12.

1. Watch this video on how a digital slr camera works ( 5 min)

2. Give Lesson on How to do a Head-swap in Photoshop. Post to Flickr. 10 marks.

STEPS:
  1. Google to find a high resolution photo of a model, actor or celebrity. Try not to use a cartoon character or an animal. Copy/Paste it into Photoshop.
  2. Go out and shoot a person in the class in the same position as your actor/celebrity. Or use one of your head shot photos. Change both photos to black and white which will make it easier.
  3. You will use the Quick selection tool to circle around the head shot of your friend. Then EDIT/CUT, open up the celebrity photo, and go to EDIT/PASTE.
  4. Next go to EDIT/TRANSFORM/SCALE and scale the head down to fit on the celebrity body.
  5. Your next step will be to erase to get out any extra pieces you do not want. Also you can go to the smudge or blur tool to go around the edge of the head to make it look more realistic.
  6. Then you want to save the photo twice, once as a Photoshop file (psd) and then as a jpeg. Make sure you pay attention to where you are saving the file. You should be saving on the l:drive under photo 9. Lastly, post the jpeg version to flicker in its own album called Photoshop#2

YOU MAY WANT TO SAVE FOR MON'S CLASS

3. NEW Writing Assignment: DialogueIn this assignment, students are to write 16 lines ( 8 lines each)minimum of dialogue between two characters. The characters can be fictional or real and the setting of the situation can be anywhere. The main criteria for this assignment is that the dialogue must move plot or advance character. (marks 10)

Here are 10 tips for how to write dialogue:
  • Say the dialogue out loud, to see if it works.
  • Cut small talk when writing dialogue.
  • Keep your dialogue brief and impactful.
  • Give each character a unique voice, this helps to develop character.
  • Add world-appropriate slang.
  • Be consistent with the characters' voices.
  • Remember who they're speaking to.
  • Avoid long dialogue paragraphs.
  • Have the dialogue move the plot of the story along

Photo/Writing 9 March 1-5

1. Continue working on Macros: Criteria: You are expected to complete 10 shots with a good variety of shots.  You must have a focal point, your photos must be in focus, have a clean background, use light appropriately and photos must be taken of interesting subject matter. You need to think about how you want to compose the shot. Try to get shots that are creative and different. You will edit the shots for cropping and lighting and then post them up to Flickr in an album called MACROS. 20 marks.

SHOW A COUPLE OF MACRO SLIDESHOWS FROM THE DESKTOP AND DISCUSS

2. Writing Assignment #3: Bucket List, typed, saved under writing, print off and hand in to Mr. Reilly when finished. Do not move on to the skatepark assignment until Macros and Bucket List are completed.

3. New Photo Assignment: Skate Park shoot  - In this assignment students should focus on taking shots from different angles. The skate park makes an excellent backdrop for photos, so make sure you have a focal point in all of your shots. You could shoot people, skaters/bikers in action, objects or even the skate park itself...just make sure you remember your rules of composition while shooting. Try a variety of different types of shots. Also if you take any objects out to shoot they must get returned.
( 10 shots = 20 marks)

Note from Ms Chase: Upon looking at people's recent shots from the skate park, I have noticed the following:
  • You need to take your time to compose the shot
  • Many of the photos are taken from too far away, get closer to your subject
  • Keep your background clean, ask people to get out of the way if they are in your shots
  • Ask yourself if the shots you have taken meet the criteria
  • No more grocery basket shots PLEASE
  • Make sure you edit shots before posting to Flickr

WED/THURS MACROS CONTINUED

All of these assignments are due the end of this week. Make sure your photos are edited and in albums on Flickr. and are ready to be marked. Hand in SETTING ASSIGNMENT on paper to MR. REILLY.

  1. Flickr set-up: 10 marks
  2. Headshots: 5 photos of 5 different people: 10 marks
  3. Composition: 5 shots : 10 marks
  4. Red, Round, Rectangular etc. 5 shots: 10 marks
  5. Writing #1 Bio: 10 marks
  6. Writing #2 Setting:10 marks
  7. Photoshop#1:Background change. Upload and put in an album on Flickr, 10 marks
  8. Composition Test: 10 marks

Common mistakes which are being made shooting macros. TAKE MORE TIME AND CARE SETTING UP YOUR SHOTS.

  • make sure you have a clear focal point
  • make sure that your focal point is in focus
  • some people are taking photos too close or zooming in too much in editing which is causing the photos to be fuzzy. On the other hand, some of you are not getting close enough to your subject
  • keep your composition simple, adding 3-4 objects into the composition just makes it cluttered and makes it difficult to determine the focal point.
  • If it is nice out, your best choice is to take your objects outside to shoot because the light is better
  • Remember your photos should be edited for cropping and lighting before posting to Flickr
When shooting: Go out and shoot your object from 5 different angles, or choose 3-4 different backgrounds for the shot. For 10 good shots, you should probably be out shooting 30-40 shots. Take your time, we are not in a rush to complete the assignment. Below are some examples of solid macros.

MON/TUES Feb 22/23 Macros or Still Life Close-Ups

Macros/Close-up shots: For this assignment you are to get close up and see things from a different perspective. You need to look at the ordinary in an an extraordinary way. Lighting will be essential, shooting in natural outside light is best, but shooting in the light boxes will also work well. Setting up your shot will be important, so do not grab an object and shoot them all on the tables. Use the background cloths that are available and take the time to compose your shots. You should be aware that you are working with an 18-55 mm lens on the digital SLR cameras so the camera will only let you go approximately 12-18 inches from your subject. Camera phones should work especially well for this assignment, but make sure your phones are set on the highest quality output.

Criteria: You are expected to complete 10 shots with a good variety of shots. I do not want to see all 10 leaf and flowers shots, or duplicates of the same shots. Try shooting from different angles. You must have a focal point, your photos must be in focus, have a clean background, use light appropriately and photos must be taken of interesting subject matter. You need to think about how you want to compose the shot. Try to get shots that are creative and different. You will edit the shots then post them up to Flickr in an album called MACROS. 20 marks

Go through the links briefly with the class.

Students can go out and shoot Macros or shoot in the Art room next door, room 510. But make sure you return and/or put back any of the objects you have used. PLEASE TREAT ALL OBJECTS WITH RESPECT.

If time, continue to work on your Writing Setting Assignment which should be handed in by the end of the week.

Assignment #2: SETTING

  • You are going to write about a favourite place using the 5 senses. As you describe the place, I want to you to use words that create visuals, sounds, tastes, and a sense of touch. The idea here is to write to create an atmosphere or feeling. Make the reader be able to visualize your scene in their mind.
  • You may need to build a fictional story around this place or simply begin describing it. In this assignment students are to focus on the elements of setting ( time, place, description)  using the senses and the concept of show not tell.  (10)
CRITERIA
  • 1 paragraph or slightly longer, typed, edited, and then good copy handed in
  • show not tell
  • be specific in your writing
  • use the senses when you write
  • make the reader feel they can be right there with you in the setting
Example:
from "The Old House at Home" (1940)
by Joseph Mitchell (1908-1996)
McSorley's bar is short, accommodating approximately ten elbows, and is shored up with iron pipes. It is to the right as you enter. To the left is a row of armchairs with their stiff backs against the wainscoting. The chairs are rickety; when a fat man is sitting in one, it squeaks like new shoes every time he takes a breath. The customers believe in sitting down; if there are vacant chairs, no one ever stands at the bar. Down the middle of the room is a row of battered tables. Their tops are always sticky with spilled ale. In the centre of the room stands the belly stove, which has an isinglass door and is exactly like the stoves in Elevated stations.

Welcome to Photo/Writing 9

Overview Photo/Writing 9: In this class you will learn much about how to see from a different perspective, how to improve your ability to take artistic photos and how to edit photos in Photoshop. There is much to know in the field of Photography and I am a learner as much as a teacher. In fact, we can learn much from each other. This class will allow a fair bit of freedom, but with this freedom comes responsibility. Along with Photography you will be learning how to improve your creative writing skills by way of various exercises and assignments.

( Class GuidelinesTo be discussed)( Speak to new students and student who have taken photography before)

We need good photography for the yearbook.

This year will be a bit different from years past. Students are encouraged to use their phones for taking photos due to Covid. School cameras will be available for student use in class only, and cameras will not be able to be signed out to take home. Techniques on how to use your phones will be taught in class. Students should download the Flickr App on their phones, but should also carry their phone charge cords with them as well. Students will be expected to disinfect all school camera equipment used.

We will be using the Flickr App for posting and organizing photos and students will be encouraged to find a phone photo editing app that will work for them.( VSCO or Snapseed) Assignments, links, videos etc will also be posted on this blog regularly which can be accessed  from home.
