A reminder that you can be shooting for your slideshow assignment that will be due next term. It is a good idea to edit and save these photos in a folder on your L Drive, do not post them on Flickr.

Writing Assignments

Assignment #1: Bio
Assignment #2: Dialogue
Assignment#3: Setting ( please type good copy and hand in to me only)
Assignment#4: Personal Experience

NEW ASSIGNMENT TODAY: You are to complete a brief brainstorm which will be in 3-4 sentences to briefly describe the following:

1- scariest experience: either real scary, accident scary or emotional scary
2- most adventurous experience, maybe even dangerous experience for you
3- experience that created the greatest accomplishment for you, something you are very proud of
4- favourite childhood memory/experience

Example for me:

1. My scariest experience was being in a car accident when the car hit black ice going too fast. I was not the driver, but the car flew the length of two telephone poles.
2. My most adventurous experience was climbing Kings Peak with a group when Iwas working at Strathcona Park Lodge. We were on a thin ledge at some points, and it was scary and exciting at the same time.
3. One of my most proud accomplishments is becoming a lifeguard and achieving the second highest lifesaving designation in Canada.
4. My favourite childhood memory is riding on the milk truck in our neighborhood, as the delivery person went from house to house. ( Yes, this does suggest how old I am!)

Please hand in to the TOC

Tues Oct 27

  • NEW ASSIGNMENT: You are going to write about a favourite place using the 5 senses. As you describe the place, I want to you to use words that create visuals, sounds, tastes, and a sense of touch. The idea here is to write to create an atmosphere or feeling.

  • You may need to build a fictional story around this place or simply begin describing it. In this assignment students are to focus on the elements of setting ( time, place, description)  using the senses and the concept of show not tell.  (10)
Example:
from "The Old House at Home" (1940)
by Joseph Mitchell (1908-1996)
McSorley's bar is short, accommodating approximately ten elbows, and is shored up with iron pipes. It is to the right as you enter. To the left is a row of armchairs with their stiff backs against the wainscoting. The chairs are rickety; when a fat man is sitting in one, it squeaks like new shoes every time he takes a breath. The customers believe in sitting down; if there are vacant chairs, no one ever stands at the bar. Down the middle of the room is a row of battered tables. Their tops are always sticky with spilled ale. In the centre of the room stands the belly stove, which has an isinglass door and is exactly like the stoves in Elevated stations.

Mon March 23 ( Ms Chase is away today)

Students should review the assignments under this post so they know what to complete by this Friday. I especially would like all of the writing assignments completed. So this means that I would like all students to be working on the setting assignment today and would like it handed in as soon as possible.

If you have finished the setting assignment, you could begin the Conflict Writing Assignment. See below for more help on how to do the setting assignment and criteria for the conflict assignment.

Welcome to Creative Writing/Photo 9

This course will run a full semester and will combine both writing and photography. Students will complete the course by producing a portfolio of written work and a slideshow of their best photography.

As a result of budget cuts and a number of cameras getting broken last year, it is strongly encouraged that students have their own camera or at the very least access to a family camera at home. Camera phones are OK, but quality of photography is not always great. Even if you have a good phone camera, I suggest you use the school's camera's during class time for assignment work.
ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE THIER OWN 2GB sd card. This is your notebook for the class. Cards will only be provided on an emergency basis, not having a card could interfere with your success in the course. These cards can be bought at grocery stores, drugstores, Walmart or Future Shop. I would like students to have this card by Mon Feb 23.
Writing Assignment #1: Students are to write a bio telling about themselves including: interests, hobbies, likes/dislikes, favourite foods, fav. books, foods etc. This assignment should be written in third person. Ex. Jane is a shy girl who lives in Comox with her two cats named Goofy and Mittens. Jane enjoys knitting in her free time ……Length 1 paragraph Criteria: detailed, specific writing ( 10 marks)
When finished, you are to find a partner in the class to read your paragraph to and get them to help you improve  the piece by offering suggestions.

When finished this assignment, you are to go to Flickr ( this is a photo share site) and you are to create a new Yahoo account and password to sign up to create a Flickr account. Please use your real name, but you can make up a fake phone number, just make sure it is a Canadian number. I would like you to copy and paste your Yahoo user name and password into a word document and the save it to your Photo 9 edited folder on the L drive. If you have trouble getting onto Flickr, try to get on at home (just remember your user name and password),

Assignment #2: Using Flickr or Google images, I want  you to find a photo that you think is really great, and then give me three reasons you think it is a good photo. You can copy and paste the photo into a word document and then write out your three reasons, and then save onto your computer until next day.
